Dumanquilas Bay (123.121E
7.734N), on the southwest coast of Mindanao,
figured
prominently in some American
contingency plans for war against Japan.
Its anchorage had room for 400
ships, it was
surrounded by hilly terrain that would protect it from seawards
bombardment,
and its hinterland had ample room for airstrips.
There were significant deposits of coal in the nearby Malangas fields.
