El Segundo (118.416W
33.911N), located on the southern
California coast near Los Angeles,
had a refinery
and port facilities for oil tankers.
It was also
the location of the Douglas
aircraft factory responsible for most SBD Dauntless dive bomber
production. Production averaged 36 SBD airframes a month between
December 1941 and November 1944.
