Fechteler commanded Indiana before being promoted
to rear admiral and serving as Barbey's
indispensible right hand during the advance along the north coast of New Guinea. Fechteler was given
command of Amphibian
Group 8 for the landings
in the Philippines. He
spent the
last months of the war as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel.
Postwar Fechteler served as Chief of Naval Operations,
the senior officer in the Navy, from 1951 to 1953.
