Fujioka commanded 62 Division at Okinawa, 1 March 1945. His division held the left side of the Japanese line in southern Okinawa and participated in the disastrous counterattack of 5 May 1945, which he had joined his friend Cho Isamu in urging on the normally more realistic Ushijima. Fujioka committed suicide on 22 June 1945 after the destruction of his division.
