Fukien is a province on the south China coast opposite the large island of Formosa. The province is mountainous, with less than 10% of its area as arable land. It was also heavily forested with a subtropical climate. However, it had important ports at Foochow (the provincial capital) and Amoy, the latter including an International Settlement.
Both ports were occupied by the Japanese in 1938, although the mountainous terrain prevented the Japanese from moving very far inland.
