Ito Takeo (1889-1965)

Ito commanded the infantry group of 38 Division when war broke out, and he directed the assault on Hong Kong Island. He later commanded the forces that seized Amboina and Timor. All these campaign were characterized by extreme ruthlessness and the massacre of prisoners. He fought on Mount Austen at Guadalcanal and was commander of 40 Independent Mixed Brigade from its activation at New Ireland in July 1944.

Following the surrender, Ito was sentenced to death for war crimes, but the sentence was not confirmed.
