Jaffna (80.017E 9.668N) is the center of the Tamil community on Ceylon. It has changed hands many times: captured by the Portuguese 1617, by the Dutch in 1658, and the British in 1795. Jaffna would have been the initial landing site for Japanese forces had they carried out their plans for invading Ceylon.
The British constructed a bomber airfield here, but it was poorly oriented and played little role in the war.
