Karaganda (73.162E 49.828N) was founded in 1928 after coal was discovered in the Karaganda Basin. The city grew rapidly, particularly after Soviet heavy industry was shifted east as a result of the Nazi invasion of 1941. Abundant iron ore is also found in the region.
