Kono commanded 31 Independent Mixed Brigade in 1943-1944 and 77 Brigade in the Philippines. Charged with the defense of Negros, he decided to withdraw to fortified positions inland, conceding the northwest coastal plain to the Americans.
Kono was hanged by the Allies in 1947 for the massacre of over 2500 civilians during punitive expeditions on Panay.
