Magong (Mǎgōng; 119.568E 23.590N) is the principal port of the Pescadores Islands, a small group located between southern Formosa (Taiwan) and mainland China. It was an important Japanese base for the invasion of the Philippines at the start of the war. Several invasion convoys were assembled in the harbor, and the Japanese had built an airfield nearby. The harbor was patrolled by ten coastal minesweepers and three gunboats and was protected by a heavy artillery fortress regiment.
The port came under heavy air attack beginning on 13 March 1945 and was regularly raided thereafter until the time of the Japanese surrender.
