Midway (117.190W 32.734N) was an outlying district of San Diego, located northwest of the city center in the delta of the San Diego River. Construction of a levee allowed the swampy ground to be drained and developed, and part of the land was deeded to the federal government for the establishment of the San Diego Marine Corps Base. 2 Marine
Division was organizing here when war broke out. The district also became the home of a Navy training center and of Lindbergh Field.
