Muroran (140.980E 42.365N) was the largest industrial center on Hokkaido. Mines in the vicinity produced 45% of Japan's coal. Both the Nihon Steel and the Wanishi Iron and Steel Works were located here, making the city the second largest producer of coke and pig iron in Japan. A synthetic oil plant was also located here.
On 16 July 1945 a surface force of three fast battleships, two light cruisers, and
eight destroyers under Oscar C. Badger
bombarded the Muroran iron works for an hour, firing 860 16"
(406mm) shells. Of these, 170 struck within the plants, causing a
lost of two and half months of coke production and slightly less
pig iron production. There was considerable collateral damage to
the city itself.
