Nielson Field (121.02E
14.55N) was an airfield located just east of Manila
in the Philippines.
When war broke out, the airfield was headquarters of Far East Air Force
and 5 Interceptor
Command, but no aircraft were yet based here. 27 Light Bomber
Squadron
had been assigned to the field, but only the aircrew had arrived; their
A-24 dive bombers were still
at sea and would be diverted to Australia.
The area was garrisoned by 57 Regiment of the Philippine Division.
