The Nicobar Islands are located on
the Indonesian island
arc between Sumatra
and the Andamans.
They are mountainous, jungle-clad
islands
with almost no resources or population. The bulk of the population and
the administrative center were located on Car Nicobar (92.823E 9.173N), the northernmost and most level of the islands.
The British did not bother either to defend the island against or to recapture them from the Japanese, who occupied them on 13 June 1942. However, they were raided on 17-19 October 1944 in a vain attempt to divert the Japanese from the imminent Leyte landings.
