Omuta (130.44E
33.05N) is a port and rail
junction on Kyushu. The population
in 1944 was about 180,000. The city was a center of the Japanese
chemical industry, particularly synthetic oil,
explosives, and fertilizer, as
well as a coke manufacturing center. It was the most important coal port in Japan.
On 17-18 June 1945 the city was bombed by 58
Bombardment Wing, which dropped 770 tons of incendiaries. However,
the attack was mostly ineffective, destroying just 4.1 percent of its
urban area.
