The platoon was the command echelon below the company and above the squad. It was commanded by a lieutenant with a sergeant first
class as assistant. A typical U.S.
rifle platoon numbered
about 36 men and consisted of three rifle squads supplemented by a
medium machine gun crew
or a mortar or bazooka team.
