Prapat (98.939E 2.660N) is a village on Lake Toba in northwestern Sumatra. It was selected as the location of one of the four secondary seaplane bases of the Marine Luchts Dienst (MLD), the Dutch naval air arm, in the Netherlands East Indies, in spite of its remote location. The base came into operation just before war broke out in the Pacific, and facilities were limited to a single concrete ramp and barracks for aircrew. However, like all major MLD seaplane bases, the base had Caterpillar tractors and special trailers to simplify moving flying boats from the water.
