Rekata Bay (158.716E
7.567S) was an almost completely undeveloped anchorage on the north coast of Santa
Isabel Island in the Solomons
group. The Japanese made occasional
use of it as a temporary anchorage or seaplane
base during the Guadalcanal
campaign, eventually garrisoning the area with 7 Combined SNLF and a battalion of Army troops. These
were withdrawn in late September 1943.
The Allies occasionally raided Rekata Bay, including five separate strafing attacks by heavy bombers on 16 September 1942. There was also serious consideration of landing at Rekata Bay instead of Munda.
