Sakamoto commanded 39 Independent Mixed Brigade from its activation in New Britain in July 1944. His son Tsutomu died in a military hospital sometime in 1944.
Following the Japanese surrender, Sakamoto was turned over to British authorities by the Australians on suspicion of mistreatment of British prisoners of war at Rabaul.
