Santa Barbara (119.722W
34.429N) is a town on the southern California coast, roughly 80 miles (130 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Located on a narrow coastal strip, with rugged mountains to the north, it had a small artificial harbor and an airfield in 1941. The Ellwood oil field was located nearby, and was briefly and ineffectively shelled by I-17 on 23 February 1942.
