Senda commanded 2 Independent_Mixed Brigade in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was an artillery officer with considerable battle experience in Manchuria and China, sent out to assist Kuribayashi with the defence of the island. He was something of a traditionalist and insisted on leading a banzai charge of 800 men on 8 March that was cut to ribbons by the Marines.
