Shemya (174.103E
52.724N) is a small island (about 4 miles or 7 km long) near the western
end of the Aleutians
chain, 35 miles (56 km) east southeast of Attu. With a maximum elevation of just 240' (75 meters), it is the only island in the Aleutians with large areas of flat
ground, and it was developed as a B-29 Superfortress base in June 1943, following the invasion of Attu. However, no aircraft larger than B-24 Liberators were based
there during the war.
