Shimonoseki (130.942E
33.960N) is a port on the strait by the same name that separates Honshu from Kyushu and joins the Inland Sea to the Sea of Japan. The strait, with a normal traffic of over a million tons per month, became a major target for aerial mining, beginning with Superfortress attacks on 29 and 31 March in support of the Okinawa invasion.
The town was protected by a heavy artillery fortress regiment, and it had a naval seaplane base that was bombarded by a cruiser force (Jones) on the night of 24 July 1945. Damage was light.
