Soc Trang (105.97E
9.60N) was the location of a Japanese
airfield in the Mekong delta. At the time war broke out in the Pacific, the airfield
based Yamada Unit with 25 A6M Zero, 11 A5M Claude, and 6 C5M2, which were tasked with providing air cover for Japanese convoys from French Indochina to Malaya.
