Montagu Stopford commanded XXXIII
Indian Corps at Dimapur during
the Imphal campaign. Slim praised him for the speed
with which he made his inexperienced corps headquarters effective.
XXXIII Indian Corps later became the hammer with which Slim smashed the
Japanese against the anvil of IV Corps in
central Burma.
