Stockton (121.277W
37.955N) is city on the San Joaquin River in the central valley of
California, approximately 90 miles (145 km) inland of San Francisco. Gold was discovered in the area in 1948 and the city was founded in 1850 The river is deep enough to be navigable by vessels of up to 2000 tons
displacement or so, and there was a Maritime Commission yard here that constructed small
ships such as net tenders. The town was also an important rail junction and boasted a municipal airfield that was used for training Air Force pilots.
