Symes commanded 70 Division in the Middle East and India until it was broken up for cadre for the Chindits. Symes became the deputy to Wingate
was passed over for command of the Chindits following Wingate's death.
With the dissolution of the Chindits, Symes commanded line of
communications troops for the remainder of the war.
