Tugboats are usually yard
craft whose function is to guide large
ships along the channel
and to or from berths. They are particularly vital in
crowded or poorly developed harbors. Oceangoing tugboats tow
disabled ships to
harbor or tow barges or floating dry docks from point to point. Tugs may be
unglamorous, but they
are essential to the efficient operation of a fleet of ships.
The U.S. Navy redesignated older tugboats as ATO and
newer oceangoing tugboats as ATF. We make no distinction in the list
below.
