Uchiyama commanded an artillery corps at Nomonhan in 1939, where he was bested in a prolonged artillery duel with the Russians. He commanded 13 Division in central China when war broke out in the Pacific and 12 Army under North China Area Army during the central Honan campaign (Ko-go), April-June 1944. His forces were responsible for clearing the railroad from the Yellow River to Wuhan. He was given command of 15 Area Army at Osaka by April 1945.
