Wakely was born Arthur Victor Trocke Robinson, but
legally changed his name in 1919. He was an expert on logistics, on
which he had written a monogram in 1924, and he also wrote a study guide
for the Staff College examination in . He commanded 7
Indian Division when war broke out in the
Pacific, and was knighted on 11 June 1942.
