Aircraft transports were merchant ships specially modified to transport aircraft and air personnel to distant locations. They were not capable of launching their aircraft, but they were designed to maximize deck space for aircraft stowage. Some were former rail car transports that were capable of transshipping their cargo to aircraft carriers at sea, a very handy capability.
