The Kitty Hawks
were former commercial railway car
carriers that were modified to carry aircraft in place of
railway
cars. They
had no capability of launching aircraft, but could transship their
cargoes at
sea, a very useful logistical
capability.
These ships were also capable of carrying a number
of PT boats.
