Kitazono commanded 3 Field Transport Command in April 1944, when he was ordered to take command of the garrison at Hollandia following the debacle at Wewak and the subsequent command shakeup. He arrived just prior to the massive Allied invasion, and somehow escaped the area to survive the war.
