Aoki commanded 40 Division under 11 Army in central China when war broke out. He had participated in the first two attempts to take Changsha, and would participate in the third attempt, December 1941-January 1942. He was recalled to Japan in September 1944 to command 2 Depot Division at Sendai, which was a rear echelon for several field divisions and brigades.
