Butterworth (100.45E
5.49N) was the location of an RAF airfield
in northern Malaya, opened in October 1941. Its runway was in the process of being extended to 6000' (1830m) to accomodate B-17 bombers when war broke out in the Pacific. Lacking any radar, the field was used as an alternate field by a number of squadrons, including 62 Squadron. The airfield was evacuated and demolished on 16-17 December 1942 and occupied by the Japanese three days later.
