The Type C midget submarines improved the Type A design by putting doors on the torpedo tubes and installing a diesel generator to improve the range. However, a full 18 hours was required for the generator to recharge the batteries. A few were equipped with a second periscope for training purposes.
The prototype was classifed as Type B, with the subsequent production craft classified as Type C. About 15 production craft were built in 1943-1944. Eight were lost in the Philippines in 1944-5.
