Chiang Ting-wen (Jiang Dingwen) was a graduate of the Paoting Military Academy and an old associate of Chiang Kai-shek. Having long been in command of the Kuomintang troops keeping watch on the Chinese Communists at Yenna, he took command of Kuomintang 1 War Area in December 1941 and continued in this post until 1944.
Chiang has been accused of corruption and of mismanaging the initial Chinese defense against Ichi-go in Honan.
