Fechteler commanded Indiana before being promoted
to rear admiral and command of Amphibious Group 8. His
force participated in landings in the Philippines. He spent the
last months of the war as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel. Postwar
he served as Chief of Naval Operations (from 1951 to 1953.)
