Higushi commanded 156 Division,
one of the divisions hastily
raised in the final months of the war. He took the view that fighting
the U.S. Army amounted to fighting the M4 Sherman tank, and so instructed his division in
anticipation of the American invasion
of Kyushu. Unfortunately, his division had only a very small number
of the 47mm antitank guns
that had proven effective against the Sherman on Okinawa, and even this gun was of
little use against the M26 Pershing tank.
