Hongo commanded 62 Division in Shansi province, China, from its activation in June 1943. His unit may have briefly participated in Ichi-go before returning to Shansi. It was then transferred to Okinawa in September 1944. He was transferred to command of 44 Army in Manchuria in March 1945, where his force was surrounded by the Russians at Taoan during their Manchurian offensive. He is thought to have surrendered at the time of the general Japanese surrender.
