Iwanaka commanded 2 Armored Division under 14 Army on Luzon in September 1944. His units suffered badly from air attack before they could engage MacArthur's landing force at Lingayen Gulf, but enough of his tanks survived to produce one of the few tank on tank engagements in the war.
