Prince Kaya was the nephew of Prince Higashikuni and a
cousin of the Empress. He held
staff positions early the war and was given command of 43 Division
in 1943. Together with his uncle and Prince Konoye, he sought the
ouster of Tojo from power
starting in April 1944, an effort that came to fruition following the Saipan disaster.
