Kirin (Jilin; 126.546E
43.836N) was founded as a Chinese
frontier fortress in
1673. It remained isolated until the railroad reached the area in
1912, after which the city
became an agricultural and lumber
processing center. The completion of the nearby Ta-feng-man power plant in the 1930's
led to rapid industrialization.
Kirin was also a province of Manchuria, of which Kirin
City was the capital in 1941.
