Kushiro (144.36E 43.01N) was an important port of Hokkaido. Coal mines in the area had a production of about 6.5 million tons a year in 1941. The city was the headquarters for a regimental district of 7 Division.
The airfield was used from February 1944 on to base antisubmarine air forces of

Air Division.
