Liao Yao-hsiang (Liao Yaoxiang) commanded the Kuomintang New 22
Division during
the defense of Burma in 1942. He was a graduate of Saint-Cyr, the French military academy, and American
officers regarded him as "a good field soldier, courageous and
determined ... a capable commander" (quoted by Larrabee 1987). However,
like all Chinese senior officers who served under Stilwell, he was handicapped by conflicting instructions from Stilwell and Chiang Kai-shek.
