Misawa (141.367E 40.683N) is a town on the east coast of northern Honshu. It was the location of a naval air station, though no combat formations were stationed here when war broke out in the Pacific.
The airfield became the assembly point for Operation Tsurgi ("Sword"), a suicide mission against the Marianas in which 60 G4M "Betty" bombers would crash-land on the American airfields while carrying 600 Japanese paratroopers
dressed in American uniforms. The original mission date in early July
1945 was postponed due to heavy damage to the airfield from American carrier strikes, and by the time the force could be reassembled, the war was over.
