Mugikura commanded 52 Division at Kanazawa when war broke out. In
November 1943 the division was deployed to the Caroline Islands.
Mugikura was simultaneously 52
Division commander and 31 Army
commander by late 1944, following the loss of Obata Hideyoshi when Guam fell to the Americans.
Mugikura surrendered all Japanese forces in the Mandates on 2 September 1945.
