Murray-Lyon commanded 11
Indian Division in Malaya at
the outbreak of war. His handling of his reserve, 28 Indian Brigade at Jitra has been described as "singularly inept" (Willmott 1982), as he
wasted this unit in piecemeal deployments rather than save it for a
counterattack. He then ignored a recommendation to regroup behind the Rimba-Sungei Jitra-Sungei Bata line and ordered a withdrawal to Alor Star, where no defensive positions had been prepared, that soon turned into a rout. He was relieved by Paris in late December 1941.
