Oppama (139.665E
35.257N) is located southeast of Yokosuka
near the entrance to Tokyo Bay.
Yokosuka Naval Air Station was located in the vicinity and was the oldest Japanese Navy pilot training facility, having been established in 1912 by a small group of naval officers trained in France and the United States.
At the time war broke out, Yokosuka Air Group was based
here, with a motley collection of aircraft for training and local
defense purposes: 36 B5N "Kate",
24 A5M "Claude", 12 D3A "Val", 3 H6K "Mavis", 12 E8N "Dave", 16 E7K "Alf", and 12 G4M "Betty".
