Paotou (Baotou; 109.86E 40.67N) is a city in the valley of the Yellow River north of the Loess Plateau west of Peiping. The city had an airfield that saw some use by the Japanese after its occupation on 17 October 1937.
In December 1939, during the Winter Offensive, the Chinese 35
and 81
Armies briefly recapture most of the city, forcing the
Japanese garrison into the southwestern corner of the city by 22
December. A Japanese reinforcement column was ambushed and forced
back that day, but a second column relieved the garrison two days
later.
